The Star of the 1969 Helsinki International Motor Show, Now for Sale

The Peugeot 504 Coupé made its world debut in March 1969 at the Geneva International Motor Show. The coupé’s body was designed by Pininfarina’s Franco Martinengo, whose other masterpieces included the Ferrari Dino and Daytona. The bodies and interiors were built in Italy at Pininfarina’s Grugliasco works, and the mechanicals were installed in France at Peugeot’s Sochaux plant. The engine was fitted with Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection.

A total of 26,878 examples were built between 1969 and 1983. This car is a pre-series example with production number 156. It was the first 504 Coupé imported to Finland, and it was displayed, in white, at the Auto69 Helsinki International Motor Show in May 1969.

The car’s first owner was Aimo Aho, founder of Maan Auto, holder of the honorary title of Kauppaneuvos (Commercial Counsellor), Knight of the French Legion of Honour and war hero. Other notable owners include Kari Rito (founder of JYP Hockey), Jukka Pajari (Lotus F18/20 driver) and Veikka Miettinen (the hero helicopter pilot of the Estonia disaster).

Väinö Miettinen was a racing driver and Peugeot’s district dealer in Imatra. He had wanted to own a 504 Coupé ever since 1969, when he saw this white coupé at the Helsinki motor show. In 1972 he bought himself a turquoise-blue 504 Coupé, and in 1975 he bought the very car he had seen at the 1969 show for his son Veikka. During a full restoration it was repainted turquoise blue to match its sister car. The 1969 Coupé spent 20 years in the Miettinen family, and the family still owns the 1972 Coupé.

The coupé was registered as a historic vehicle (museum-inspected) in 1995. In recent years it has undergone extensive restoration work, including a repaint, seat reupholstery, a full Kugelfischer service, fuel transfer pumps, alternator, power windows, wiper motor, rear section of the exhaust and whitewall tyres. The exact mileage is unknown.

The car is very tidy and fully functional, but it is not flawless; the paintwork, dashboard and centre console, among other things, leave room for improvement.
